ROSELAND NEIGHBORHOOD OF CHICAGO

Roseland is one of Chicago’s 77 recognized communities and is located in the Far Southeast Side of Chicago.  The Roseland neighborhood of Chicago is identified as community number 49.  Roseland’s approximate boundries are 87th Street to 91st Street to Burnside Avenue (North), South Cottage Grove Avenue (East), 115th Street (South), and Rail Line just east of Eggleston Avenue and 103rd Street to Halsted Street (West).  Roseland neighborhoods inlcude Fernwood, Princeton Park, Lilydale, Rosemoor, Sheldon Heights, West Roseland, and parts of West Chesterfield.

ROSELAND HISTORY

Roseland was first settled in the last 1840’s when Dutch immigrants came to farm the area.  Soon it became known a ‘High Prairie’ as stores were being built along Michigan Avenue.  In 1873 James Bowen was building his ironworks company in South Chicago and he came up with the name ‘Roseland’ due to all the beautiful flowers in the community.  Roseland was annexed into Chicago in 1892.
